Ordinarily, the two major U.S. stock exchanges, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq, are open for their main trading sessions starting at 9:30 a.m. and ending at 4:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday. However, there are exceptions. Stock market holidays are weekdays when the markets are closed.

In addition to most federal holidays, the NYSE and Nasdaq are closed on Good Friday. While many federal offices are closed for Columbus Day and Veterans Day, the NYSE and the Nasdaq are open for trading.

In addition to times when markets are closed for the entire day, there are some occasions when markets hold abbreviated trading sessions. These shortened trading sessions occur on days that surround other holidays. The NYSE and the Nasdaq close at 1 p.m. ET on the day before Independence Day, the day after Thanksgiving, and the day before Christmas.
